Dim Sum, Wontons & Almond Jello

This past Friday morning was really chilly. I waited in line for the grand opening of the Barrhaven’s Future Shop and picked myself up a portable external hard drive. It was worth it. There was a bonus to going early too.

Dim sum! I picked up some dim sum from Sea King and enjoyed it at home.

Shrimp siu mai and ha gow. I also asked for hot sauce, soy sauce, and extra cheung fan sauce. They added a small container of vinegar as well.

Beef balls and beef cheung fan.

Chicken feet in black bean sauce, spare ribs, and taro dumplings.

Everything was decent, though I found the amount of minced beef filling in the cheung fan disappointing. I wonder if they’d add more if we ate in the restaurant.

On a random note, I noticed that Sea King has soup dumplings (xiao long bao) on their menu.

That evening, VN and I made a relatively quick dinner of wontons. I was surprised how it turned out considering that the filling didn’t have oyster sauce and sesame oil. I seasoned the ground pork with fish sauce, sugar, black pepper and lots of soy sauce. There were diced onions, green onions, cabbage, and carrots too.

The soup was made from a can of Campbell’s consommé, beef broth, water, green onion stalks, and slices of ginger. It tasted like the soy sauce Chinese restaurants put over steamed fish, but without the oil. It was weird, but it tasted fine with the wontons.

We also made almond jello and served it with canned fruit. KN downed her two large bowls of almond jello as if it was water. Dinner was quiet satisfying although it was on the lighter side.

By the time this post is published online, I’ll be on my way to Hong Kong for a bit of a vacation. I can’t wait! Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, and Shanghai – here I come!
